Before I go to the purpose of this journal entry, I want to make it clear that I recognize art comes in many forms and styles (including traced sketches of cartoon characters).
So, has DeviantArt been subverted?
What I'm noticing (eg: under "most popular new uploads) is that a growing number of people are using deviant art's liberal policy on artistic nudity to use this site to upload naked or semi-naked "selfies" (photos taken of yourself). I don't think a debate over what is art applies to images that are clearly taken from webcams or cellphones to show-off - or share - the images with the growing number of perverts who are frequenting this website. With help from Google, I traced many of the naked selfie images uploaded to da back to other websites like TheChive and selfie porn sites where people post these kinds of images.
I always felt that deviantart was better than some of those trashy sites. Judging by the newsletters and contests here, I feel that it wasn't the intent of the site creators either. What's worse is that often, when these dodgy accounts eventually get banned, their images remain! What's the point in reporting an image when the account is already deleted?
So, should I take my concerns to da, have others already done this, or is it time to walk away?
